Search This:

Try "Googling" Daniel Rowley on Google
You'll find this site (danrowley.com) through "natural SEO", or "organic search". This site just happens to be about Daniel Rowley, and it's been coded properly for the search engines. It's a good grass-roots way to get your site out there. For a more aggressive plan, it's best to buy keywords, and place ads online. If you google Chicago Design Firm, you'll see Daniel Rowley Design come up both naturally and as a sponsored result, however, most people tend to click on the natural results.

Marketing your website on the internet.

As advertised in countless spam emails, you need to drive traffic to your site, and more importantly you need to capture qualified leads. The way to do this is to pay for leads by buying keywords though Overture, Yahoo's keyword mediator, and Google, which supplies itself with sponsored keyword placement. The process goes like this, you place a sum of money into your account at Overture or Google, and you bid on certain keywords. The cost of a click, from a person typing in your specific keyword varies by market demand. For example you may pay $1.00 for each click if you want to be first for the keyword "Chicago hotel". But for the Chicago hotel that is getting that click, they may book a $139 per night room, so they have to measure the click-to-close ratio. How many people book a room on their site that have searched their keyword, how many went to the site? How many started the booking process and bailed out? Where did they bail out? Why?

On the flipside of the paying-for-keyword coin are the less expensive keywords. I could buy my name for example and there probably wouldn't be any competition, so it would cost me the minimum amount for each clickthrough.

There are many firms that specialize in online campaign management if you're not up to this task yourself.

There are other ways to attract traffic to your site. From the grass roots methods such as word-of-mouth, to link exchanging with site in a symbiotic field, to making sure your site is Search Engine Optimized, or properly coded in a way that the search engines prefer. This last concept is sometimes called SEO, or Organic, or Natural SEO. Where people looking for your subject matter may come across it on the internet without clicking on a "sponsored link". For example type Daniel Rowley into Google, you'll find this site just because this site is actually about Daniel Rowley.

There are some basic things to get the search engines to notice you. You must create a good title for your page, and you must write accurate meta-data. Meta data is 1) the keywords people would be searching for you by, and 2) a sentance-long description of the page, which can also be used as the first sentence on the webpage itself. Further, the words on your webpage, or 'content', must reflect the same title, description, and keywords that are spelled out in the metadata. It is also useful to use headline tags such as H1 or H2 for your most important paragraph titles and key message. You can always redefine the way the headlines look using a cascading style sheet, or CSS.

If this seems perilously confusing to you, no worry, I can help you with that, just write me an email and I can take a look at your site and tell you if it is properly "Search Engine Optimized".
